Everything Changes with One Exception
Some people like change. Some people hate change. The reasons are many on both sides. The fact of the matter is that we all change, everything is changing. Heraclitus aptly observed, "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man"
As I write these words, things are changing and everything moves from the present to the past. We look forward for change that pleases us but hate the changes that we don’t want or like in our lives. This is human nature. We want more of what pleases us, we want it to remain longer, but it isn’t possible. Even those things that we enjoy, we reach a point where we want them to change. We want people to change, then when we want them to not change. Regardless, of what we think about change, we are in a state of flux. Everything is in state of flux including our bodies and all that we are.
Is there anything or anyone unchanging and reliable? Outside of ourselves, yes. God is. I was reminded of what the Bible says in James 1:17:
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Everything that is good and every perfect gift we get in this world comes from God even if it doesn’t last. He is the Father of lights, the one who gives us the heavenly lights that illuminate our world. God is unchanging. In Micah 3:6 He says to Israel that it is because he never changes that they are not due to their disobedience. He was faithful to them in the covenant He made with them regardless of their unfaithfulness.
God doesn’t change. There is not a slight of change in his nature. In his nature He only knows how to give good things to his children. This will never change. No doubt, we will experience many changes more in our life span here but we can trust God who never changes. He will never waver in anything he promises us, especially his goodness toward us.
David expressed it beautifully in Psalm 23:
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever” (v. 6)
Regardless of all the changes that will come to us, God’s goodness and his unfailing love will be after us all the days of our lives. And at the end of our days, we will dwell in his home forever.
That’s an encouraging word for us!
